This character LCD screen has a white LED back light and black lettering against a gray screen. It can be read without the backlight but good contrast depends on the backlight, so the display is best in indoor situations. This display mates seamlessly with the LCD117 serial LCD driver board, and is offered as an option bundled with that kit.
